The sworn (or official) translation is neither a more faithful nor a better quality translation than the simple translation. The sworn translation is just a legal requirement for the document to have legal effect in a country with a language other than the country of the issuer. The sworn translator – vested with the power for that purpose by the authority concerned – certifies the faithfulness of the translation with an authority similar to that of a notary public.

Thus, the sworn translation is only necessary if the document of your country needs to have legal validity abroad or the document from abroad needs to be legally valid in your country. It is then important to know what the purpose of the document is. This is the case of birth, marriage or school certificates, bylaws and articles of association, rogatory letters and any other document required by public authorities.

Simple Translation

The simple (or non-official) translation is neither a less faithful nor a lower quality translation than the sworn translation. The simple translation should be done when there is no need of a sworn translation, when the purpose of the translation is merely informative – for myself, my company, for a certain public I want to inform about something. This is the case of magazine articles, websites, letters, reports to the holding company, technical manuals, implementation guidelines for integrated management softwares such as SAP, etc.

Should there be no need of a sworn translation, a simple translation should be ordered, because the simple translation will always be less expensive than the sworn translation.
